"We know that there is an increase
in home burglaries once the clocks go back and the evenings become darker. Unlit properties can easily suggest that no one is home and of course many of us are out at this
time of year celebrating bonfire activities. Evidence suggest that campaigns like this have helped to continue a year-on-year reduction in burglaries. It's important to continue the good work and ensure both police and residents are doing all they can to deter criminals. " |

Staying secure this winter... |
Unfortunately the darker evenings of winter brings with it the traditional increase in burglaries and break ins. It is hoped that with a little education and awareness to the criminal activity, the initiative will help to reduce an average of 259 burglaries per month.
In addition to highlighting general home security advice throughout social media and traditional media, Sussex police is keen to send specific messages to more vulnerable members in the community to ensure they know about other forms of burglary that could affect them, distraction burglary included.
