Access Control Security
The software controlling your access control system allows you to manage the entire system from your desk, adding or removing users, changing permissions, or adjusting the time frame during which some or all of the doors in the system are accessible. Every command entered into the system is immediately adopted by all the doors at once. As well as control of the system, you can also view reports through the system; monitoring who accessed which door and when - meaning you can use the system to monitor attendance or time keeping.
Smart Cards e.g. Mifare/Desfire
Using smart cards as tokens involves an extra level of security. The reader and card go through a 'handshake' process involving two-way communication and based on an encrypted mathmatical algorithm. This involves comparing security keys held within the card and reader. This process of "Mutual Authentication" ensures security and prevents someone using an electronic listening device could not duplicate the communication between the card and the reader.
This higher level of security is still dependant on the permissions set up within the controlling computer software. The improved security offered by smart cards is ideal for applications where the card is used for more than access control, such as computer access or cashless vending.
